2023 Offseason

It is going to take a while to get over that game. We had them at arms length most of the game. Jays led 41-34 with 13:14 left in the game, 77.5% win probability according to KenPom. Going from a celebration thinking we just forced OT to realizing they have 2 FTs to win the game was a gut punch to say the least. Some thoughts heading into the off-season:

- Happy for Coach Huss for getting the head job at High Point. Losing assistants to take head jobs is ultimately the sign of a healthy program. Mac's assistants having success getting and excelling as head coaches will help Mac's ability to fill those vacancies with quality candidates. Admittedly, I was initially underwhelmed when Mac hired Huss. Huss at the time had limited experience as a D1 assistant and it felt like an easy hire because Huss was an alum. Huss went on to show he was a quality assistant coach for Mac. He recruited well and helped land guys like Nembhard and Kalk. He opened some doors internationally. I'm thankful we were able to keep him a couple years ago when Illinois tried to hire him. Huss turned out to be a great hire. Best of luck to him at High Point.

- Last year's offseason recruiting was pretty quiet. The Jays didn't lose anyone of significance and kept their staff together. They won their two big recruiting battles for Sheierman and King. We know they will have to hire an assistant. I'm hoping it is more of the same in the end.

- I don't expect the roster to be set for a quite a while. I believe all 5 starters are at least fringe NBA prospects at this point (or maybe will be in the case of R2). Typically we see a large amount "declare" for the NBA draft, go through the pre-draft process, and then see many ultimately decide to come back to school. I think it's reasonable to expect nearly the entire starting lineup to declare. The deadline to declare for the NBA draft is April 23rd and the deadline to withdrawal is May 31st.

- We know Creighton is interested in Andrew Rohde from Saint Thomas and John Tonje from Colorado St. (edit: Tonje committed to Mizzou) at this point. I expect their to be some turnover near the bottom of the roster. Do Bello and Reef end up in a Creighton uniform next year? Do those guys seek a larger role somewhere else? Does Creighton want both of the them back?

I'm hoping that most of this group tries to run it back, but you just never know.

New board moderators

As this board continues to evolve and grow it’s time we name a couple of board moderators who , frankly, spend as much if not more time on the board than me.

Beginning November 1st Ziggyweavs and Mikero will be the moderators of the message boards. I’ll just briefly spell out what they will do.

First, they have my full backing. Hopefully they will have little to do and the board runs smoothly with everyone respecting one another. And let me say that over the years I think I can count on one hand the number of members we have had issues with. We all know about the biggest issue we have had over the last year or two and hopefully those days are over.

There are really only three things I can think of that they may to act on-1) being posting info on another site or board that is posted here first. We’ve unfortunately seen this happen so we all know what I mean there. 2) posting direct links from other recruiting sites. The most commonly seen is 247. I mentioned this is the post about rules of the board. This was further emphasized this year by Josh, the head man of the Rivals sites. In my yearly meeting with him a few months ago he stressed that he does not want people posting links or Twitter photos for 247 feeds posting recruiting info. He also mentioned he had seen it on most boards and wants us to monitor it.. Look I’m gonna be pretty lax with this but yet still try and comply. If you see something that is of interest to the board by one of these sites all I ask is don’t include a link or a Twitter screen shot. Something like I saw on another site that ….. is fine.
3)excessive personal attacks will not be tolerated. Look for 99% of time this has been no issue. I want you all to debate points and have plenty of back and forth. But in the end it’s just two peoples opinion and no reason to get personal

Again if you take anything from this post assured I want plenty of debate so please do not misread this as any kind of censorship. It would have to be pretty severe for Mikero or Ziggy to step in and send u a DM asking you to refrain.

When minor things happen they may send you a DM simply saying “hey watch this” or “ hey next time” etc. They arent targeting you or attacking you— just trying to make the board a great place for everyone. So please treat them with respect. Well with in your right to ask for an explaination etc. There is a lot of grey area so I have ask both of them to error on the side of letting it go.

Lastly one minor thing you may see them do is point out if a post starts going in the wrong direction on a thread— ie posting about the refs at the last game on a recruiting thread. We only do this so the threads are readable for all, that info is not posted or repeated multiple times and so those members who don’t have time to join the boards regularly can follow topics. Again really a small thing and it’s never been a problem.

Thanks for reading this and thanks for being a member. I’m sure you will find that these two will be a huge positive in keeping this board a pleasant place to be. And as we gain members— which we could see a big influx of—it will give them a positive initial interaction. We have enough drama in our personal lives and of course in The world news. Let’s make this a respite from stress of our daily lives and a fun place to be. Thanks

Bluejay Banter 2023-24

As we move closer to another basketball season it’s time to make a few announcements and share with you what’s been happening over the last five weeks

First, five weeks ago we were presented with an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. Some of you have been in the Let It Fly sports bar and I’m sure many more of you plan to visit it this upcoming season. One of the amazing features of LIF is the podcast studio in the second tier of the bar. It is a state of the art facility and has everything you need for top flight audio and video production. Some of you may have seen the Let It Fly podcast show that is recorded in the studio. We were asked if we had an interest in doing our post game shows live there this season. Of course this was a no brainer. Not only to have our podcast produced in a bigger fashion but with the opportunity to have it be seen by a wider audience and distributed in every possible fashion in social media. The show will air live on many of the screens in the bar immediately after the game and will also be available on many channels for viewing at a later time— most notably on our YouTube channel.

A couple of notes about the postgame. Ross will join me for some games and we will also be joined by former Jay Josh Jones. Our show will have all the features and segments you have come accustomed to but besides a coach every show we are also adding a player which will be awesome. Other features are also in the works.

Our regular Bluejay Banter show has been on hiatus for a few weeks until we get things organized with LIF. The current plan is to broadcast our weekly show live there as well. We hope to have another edition of BJB up and running in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for that.

On a personal front I have decided to call it a day with my regular job and move to a semi retired status. This will take effect October 1st and will allow me to get all our ducks in a row for the upcoming season. It will allow me to spend much more time on Bluejay Banter and BJB.com. This will give you more insight into the program thru articles and more importantly practice reports and other features that are in the works.

So with my move a few minor changes with BJB. I want to thank Zach for all his help getting our podcast up and running. Would not have been able to do it without you. But as we move forward with LIF and our current podcasts there’s a great chance Zach will continue to work on our shows which I am excited about. Jeremy and I have split duties on covering recruiting. With my personal life changing I will be able to take on most of the recruiting stuff. Again want to thank him for all he has done. But he will still be keeping an eye on the recruiting news and giving me a hand when needed.

One last thing. We are currently lining up sponsors for our postgame show. If you have a business we would love to work with you to promote it and reach a large batch of new customers. There are many perks to being a sponsor but one for a Jays fans is a reserved table at LIF for every CU game plus a meet n greet with players and coaches plus discounts on food and drink. Shoot me a PM if interested.

Thanks for your time. Look forward to a special season.

NEW--PLEASE READ--Bluejay Banter message board policies

Everyone— thought with the number of new members and the increase message board activity it would be a good time to republish and update the message board policies,

One of the main purposes of this board is to share inside information. Your subscription gives you the right to this information. As such let’s be respectful of all and make sure that the information received here stays here. That’s pretty much a standard policy but there are times to be even more careful about sharing info— Jeremy will usually give you a heads up along the lines of keep it here. Usually this has been info that is received from the staff and we have been given those instructions. To stay in their good graces and to keep getting that privileged information it’s important we respect the staffs decisions on said info.

IMPORTANT--there are also times when we can't give you a name of a recruit even though we may know it or have a good idea who it is. We will give it in due time. But to keep our pipeline of information flowing we have to be careful what we release and when. I know this doesn't make sense to some of you but I have learned the hard way and found that balancing the tight wire between releasing everything and being prudent is the best practice.

It is especially important as we continue to gain the staff's trust we need to keep things here. And anytime you spread information to others you cheapen it’s value as you have given info to people who have not paid for it. That lessens everyone’s value to being on the board so I’m sure you all want to be respectful to the other members here. I think everyone understands this. We have had to call very few people out on this so lets keep it that way.

The message board is for sharing opinions on Jays sports--no matter how far out those opinions may be. Healthy discussion and debate is good. Challenging one another stimulates thought and reflection. So it's all encouraged. Just remember if someone challenges your opinion its not personal. But DON"T get personal. No personal attacks. So if I challenge your thought don't be offended. Just remember I'm always right and learn going forward. (I'm kidding--I think!!)

There is one way to get on my bad side. Attacking my staff for the job they do. All of us who contribute to this site have other jobs. This is a part time gig. We spend a lot our free time trying to get you the best info possible. If you don't like the job we are doing I suggest two options. Find another source for your info or DM and me and we can have a discussion about it. (The second option is far and away the most preferred.) I am open to all and any suggestions. Just DM me and we can chat.

Some other points---

—Twitter is a great thing. Twitter is also a horrible thing. Just remember what we have learned. Don’t read into who follows who as a sign some recruit is going to sign here. We have seen so many times this means nothing at all. Post if you must but remember it’s far from a tell

—just remember everybody has a friend, relative, butcher etc who knows somebody who knows somebody who’s an insider. I can’t tell you the number of texts, emails, conversations that happen over a week with me where I’m given info. I rarely post any of it because the info is rarely accurate and events show these are just rumors and not fact. (Some of my favorites are we saw X recruit on campus today) No one is saying you can’t post this info but just keep in mind the accuracy of this info.

—please make sure to post info under the correct thread. This isn’t that big of a deal but it is frustrating to all when info on a recruit is posted all over the place, then that info is posted twice or more. Feel free to kindly point this out when you see it happen. Thanks

—this is just a pet peeve of mine but I think most would understand this one. When posting about a recruit and listing his ranking is it too much to ask to use the Rivals ranking and not the 247 rankings? I mean you have to look up the rankings anyway and since you’re on a Rivals board they are only a few clicks away. I know some like the way 247 does their rankings but there has never been anything to prove one is more accurate than the other. If you can do this as a personal favor to me it would be great. And I’ll repeat what we already posted that we should never post links to 247 stories since we now have a local competitor

—With all the don’ts I have a do. Please do post offers n visit info if you see it under the correct thread. There have been a ton thrown out there and it’s helpful if we miss any. Thanks to all who have done so in the past.

We are making some huge changes for the better over the next couple of months. I think most can guess that changes are coming to audio/video side. Much more on that in the days to come. Besides our increased recruiting staff we soon bring someone aboard to write for us. A big plus for all of us. ( also this summer we will bring back our evaluation of all of Mac's recruiting classes-something I know a lot of people look forward to)

Finally, I value each and everyone of our members and look forward to the year ahead. I hope we continue to have the robust discussions we have had this season and am excited what lies ahead. Also excited to get back to some normalcy. Still thinking about bringing the golf tourney back. Am also looking into having some other in person gatherings of our members.

Thanks again. Any questions hit me up with a PM

Welcome New Members

Thought we'd have a place to keep everyone informed when new members hit the board.

Welcome--SeattleJay and scsladek.

We encourage your interaction and sharing ideas and info. Just remember some things on this board are inside info and are of a private nature and should not be shared out side this board.

We are excited to have you aboard!!!
