Coach Greg McDermott has never beat Duke (0-1). Creighton vs. Duke... first meeting ever. No common opponents this season.
Can Creighton win and advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history?
What a couple weeks in Jesuit history, Creighton Basketball and school history! Happy Palm Sunday everyone!
C-Plumlee vs. Echenique
PF-Kelly vs. McDermott
G-Sulaimon vs. Gibbs
G-Curry vs. Chatman
G-Cook vs. Manigat
(thanks Jayman for saving me from typing it on the Duke rivals site, as Coach K talks match ups)
Of course, Creighton's bench needs to step up and provide points, rebounds and minutes, as well.
Creighton doesn't have Duke's history or Coach K. But, Coach Red McManus took Creighton to the NCAAs, despite Coach K not on the roster back in the 1960s. We could use the rebounding like Paul Silas today. But, hopefully Gregory Echenique continues to step up in his final days as a Bluejay. Grant Gibbs needs to have an outstanding game. We can't forget the other players who surround Doug McDermott.
Basketball is a team game and everyone needs to play with purpose and step up for the Jays.
A win today will join Greg McDermott with Red in NCAA Tournament wins.
Creighton is a No. 7 seed for the first time in history. It's Creighton's second-best seed ever, trailing only the No. 6 seed in 2002-03. Since the NCAA began seeding all the teams in 1979, MVC teams are now 5-3 as the seventh seed, including a 4-0 mark in their first game. The MVC's last No. 7 seed, Wichita State, reached the Sweet 16.
By the way, had Creighton beat Central Michigan in 2003, we would have faced Duke then.
In the 1980s, it was the NIT. It is so nice to see Creighton Basketball playing outstanding ball under Coach McDermott.
Doug McDermott owns 63 points in three career NCAA Tournament games. The only Creighton players with more NCAA Tourney points are Paul Silas (105 in 6 games), Kyle Korver (71/5) and Doug Brookins (70/4). McDermott's career NCAA Tourney scoring average of 21.0 ppg. is on pace to surpassGene Harmon's Creighton record career tourney scoring average of 20.0 ppg. Harmon (in 1974) is the only player in CU history with multiple games of 20 points or more in the same tournament. In three career NCAA Tournament games, Doug McDermott averages 21.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game,
It would be awesome to see Doug McDermott reach the pinnacle of Jays basketball by leading the program to the first NCAA Sweet 16 birth. As the article on UNI pointed out, Creighton, like the Panthers, would face Michigan State in the Sweet 16 game, if they can get by Duke tonight.
Go Jays Go!
